Fresh Cut Christmas Tree After Care

Storage

Always store your tree upright in a cool dry place, ideally in a porch or garage still within the netting wrap.

Set up

Choose a position in your home away from direct heat sources (radiators, fires, log burners, etc). Ideally in as cool a room as possible, even if you can turn the heating down a notch!

Stand

Trees like to drink so preferably use a stand with a water reservoir, this will need topping up throughout the season! The easy way to set up your tree is to use a sharp saw and cut an inch or 25mm off the bottom of your tree this will open the bark and allow the tree to drink. Put your tree into your stand with the netting still on, check you have aligned it vertically. Tighten the wing nuts and fill the reservoir with fresh water only, then cut the net from bottom to top. Let your Christmas tree settle for an hour naturally before decorating.

Watering

Every 2 days check the water level, the level should be above the base of the tree. To check this simply dip your finger into the reservoir and top up accordingly. Never let your tree dry out!

Tree Disposal

There are many ways to utilise a used Christmas tree, you can find lots of charities that will collect as well as tree chipping services. Or use it yourself by placing it amongst your garden to let nature shelter with its help. Just search for ideas online and you might be surprised!

Pot Grown Christmas Tree After Care

Storage

Always store your tree upright in a cool dry place, ideally in a porch or garage still within the netting wrap.

Set up

Ideally leave your tree in its pot that it was grown in till after Christmas as disturbing their roots will only stress the tree. Choose a position in your home away from direct heat sources (radiators, fires, log burners, etc). Ideally in as cool a room as possible, even if you can turn the heating down a notch!

Care

Check there is enough soil/compost in the pot (as some could be lost in transport). If so, top up with soil, nothing special, just earth. Place the pot on a drainage tray and check the soil is damp to touch. It is important to keep the soil damp not wet and that the pot is not sitting in water.

Watering

Check your tree every 2 days and water if necessary with fresh water only.

After Christmas

After the festive season in your warm home you will need to climatise the tree fast. To do this put in a cool space like a garage or shed for 2-3 weeks away from warmth however not a freezing area, this will cause stress to the tree. This process will prepare the tree for the cold and the frost. After 2-3 weeks place your tree outside, plant it out in your garden or larger pot. Remember to water your tree throughout the first summer or a drawn out period of heat. Christmas trees like well drained areas in full sun or part shade. Enjoy your tree for many years!
